Seed Buyer FAQ
Germination
Why haven't my seeds sprouted yet?
Native and wildflower seeds are not like vegetable seeds — many species require specific conditions before they'll germinate. Common reasons for delayed sprouting include incomplete stratification, soil temperature outside the germination window, insufficient light or moisture, or seeds that are in a natural dormancy period. Give them time and consistent conditions before assuming failure.
Do you guarantee a germination rate?
No. As stated in our Refund Policy, we do not guarantee germination rates. Germination depends on factors outside our control after delivery — including your soil quality, temperature, light, watering habits, and how seeds are stored once received. We grow and source quality seed and pack it carefully, but results vary by grower and environment.
How long should I wait before giving up?
Patience is key with native seeds. Some species sprout within 2–3 weeks under ideal conditions; others may take a full season or longer, especially if they require cold-moist stratification. We recommend waiting at least one full growing season before concluding a batch has failed.
Cold-Moist Stratification
What is cold-moist stratification?
Stratification mimics the natural winter conditions many native seeds need to break dormancy. Cold-moist stratification means keeping seeds moist and refrigerated (typically 33–40°F / 1–4°C) for a set period — often 4–12 weeks depending on the species — before sowing.
How do I stratify seeds at home?
A simple method: mix seeds with slightly damp sand, peat moss, or paper towel, place in a sealed zip-lock bag, label with the species and start date, and refrigerate for the required period. Check periodically for mold or premature sprouting. Sow immediately after the stratification period ends.
Outdoor stratification: Sow seeds directly in soil in Fall, Winter, or Early Spring before first frost, depending on species requirement. Or sow seeds in pots or trays, protect from birds or flooding using a cold frame or similar protection.
Does every seed you sell need stratification?
No — it varies by species. Check the care instructions included with your packet or in product description, or email us at grower@crosstimbersnursery.com if you're unsure whether your species requires stratification and for how long.
Packet Contents & Species Labeling
What's inside my seed packet?
Each packet contains seeds of the species listed, along with basic sowing information. Packet quantities and weights are noted on the listing. Seeds are not mixed with other species unless the listing explicitly describes a mix.
How accurate is the species labeling?
We label packets with the common name and scientific name of the species. We take labeling seriously and are knowledgeable on plant identification. If you believe you received the wrong species — for example, plants that look nothing like the expected species at maturity — contact us within 7 days of delivery with photos and your order number and we'll make it right (see Claim Steps below).
What if my packet is damaged or missing seeds?
Per our Refund Policy: if your seed packet arrives damaged, wrong, missing, or the packaging was compromised in transit, contact us within 7 days of delivery with photos and we'll send a free replacement or refund.
Storage
How should I store seeds I'm not planting right away?
Store seeds in a cool, dry, dark location — a sealed container in the refrigerator works well for most species. Avoid freezing unless you know the species tolerates it. Keep seeds away from humidity, which can trigger premature germination or mold. Properly stored native seeds can remain viable for 1–3 years depending on the species, though viability decreases over time.
Can I store seeds in the packet they arrived in?
Our packets are suitable for short-term storage. For longer storage (more than a few months or year plus), transfer seeds to an airtight container.
Hardiness & Regional Expectations
Will these plants grow in my region?
Cross Timbers Nursery is based in Johnson County, North TX, and our growing experience is rooted in that environmental context. We do our best to provide accurate hardiness zone information based on USDA zones, but plant performance depends on your specific microclimate, soil, rainfall, and care. It is the buyer's responsibility to confirm a species is suited to their region before purchasing. If you would like advice on how particular species would work in your region, email us at grower@crosstimbersnursery.com .
What USDA hardiness zone are you in?
We're in north-central Texas, approximately USDA Zone 8b. Many of our native plants are adapted to the Southern Great Plains, Cross Timbers, and surrounding ecoregions. Some species we carry are broadly adaptable; others are regionally specific. Check the product listing or email us for guidance.
Are there any plants or seeds I can't legally receive in my state?
Yes. As noted in our Shipping Policy and Legal Notice, certain plants and seeds are subject to agricultural regulations that vary by state. It is your responsibility to confirm that items are legal to receive in your location. For example, Proboscidea louisianica (devil's claw) is prohibited in Washington state.
Shipping Holds
Why is my seed order delayed?
Seeds ship on our normal processing schedule of 1–7 business days and are not weather-sensitive, so they ship year-round. If your order is delayed, it may be due to a high-volume period. We'll post any delays on our website and social media.
Do weather holds apply to seeds?
No. Per our Shipping Policy, seeds ship in protective packaging and are not as weather-sensitive. Weather holds apply only to live plant orders, which we monitor for freezing temperatures (below 32°F), extreme heat (above 95°F), or severe storms along the shipping route.
What happens if my order is placed on a weather hold?
If your live plant order is on a weather hold, we'll email you with an updated ship date. You're welcome to request a hold yourself or update your delivery address if you know extreme weather is coming.
Claim Steps
My seeds arrived damaged / wrong / missing — what do I do?
- Email us at grower@crosstimbersnursery.com or use the contact form at www.crosstimbersnursery.com
- Include your order number, a brief description of the issue, and clear photos of the packet and any damage
- Submit your claim within 7 days of delivery
- Our team will respond within 1–2 business days with next steps — typically a free replacement or refund
What is not covered?
Per our Refund Policy, all seed sales are final once shipped. We do not cover poor germination results caused by soil, temperature, watering, light, or storage conditions after delivery. Claims submitted after 7 days may not be eligible.
