Very excited to offer this uncommon native! False gaura (Oenothera glaucifolia) is a biennial or short-lived perennial wildflower in the Onagraceae family. It is native to the central and western United States, where it grows in prairies, rocky slopes, and open woods. The plant is relatively rare, but it is becoming more popular as a garden ornamental due to its showy white flowers and long blooming period. It is low-maintenance and drought tolerant. It is well suited to dry, rocky limestone soils False gaura can grow to be 3-6 feet tall, with slender, erect stems that are usually unbranched. The leaves are narrow and lanceolate, with a glaucous or waxy coating that gives them a bluish-green color. The flowers are white, with four petals that are about 1/4 inch wide. They open at night and release a sweet fragrance that attracts pollinators, such as moths and hummingbirds. False gaura blooms from late spring to early fall. The flowers are followed by elongated capsules that contain tiny brown seeds. The plant is self-incompatible, so it needs two different plants to produce viable seeds. SOWING: This plant is quite uncommon in cultivation and has little info on germination. These being native seeds they are best planted in Fall and allowed to cold-stratify naturally over the Winter. I had success direct-seeding in a weed-free bed, and in sandy pots left outside over winter. OR, seeds can be artificially cold-moist stratified in a refrigerator for 30-60 days Listing is for 15 seeds
