Yucca necopina, the Brazos River yucca or Glen Rose yucca, is a rare endemic native to a small region in north-central Texas Cross Timbers. This plant is a perennial shrub that grows in small colonies of rosettes. The plant grows to a height of 2 feet, with bloom stalks reaching a height of 7 feet. Its flowers are greenish-white and bloom in Spring. The species is similar to Y. pallida and Y. arkansana.
Yucca necopina was originally thought to be a natural hybrid of Yucca arkansana and Yucca pallida until DNA proved otherwise. The 2' tall x 2' wide rosettes of green leaves are adorned with curly threads along the edges. The Brazos River soapwort is topped in summer with 9' tall, branched flower spikes, laden with white bell-shaped flowers. Yucca necopina is closely related to Yucca louisianensis.
USDA Zones: 7-9
Sunlight: Full Sun, Part Shade
Soil needs: Well-draining, Sandy, Limestone, Sandy Loam, Rocky/Gravelly
Habitat: Grasslands on sandy soils and limestone outcrops
Germination:
Seeds may need cold-stratification to break dormancy, either planted in Fall or early Spring, or kept in the refrigerator over winter. Soaking the seeds for 24 hrs helps in some situations. Plant seeds in a gritty, well-draining soil mix and keep moist but never wet to prevent rot.
