Hummingbird favorite! Standing Cypress (Ipomopsis rubra) or Texas Plume/ Scarlet Gilia is an outstanding biennial native wildflower with very showy scarlet blooms on tall spikes of interesting ferny foliage. It is loved by hummingbirds especially and butterflies, bees, and others. Standing Cypress thrives in dry, rocky, sandy soils and sandy loam. Genetics are from Central/North Texas. This is a fantastic showy native wildflower that is sure to attract wildlife as well as interest from neighbors
Germination: Propagate by sowing seed in fall. Be sure the seeds are in good contact with the soil by lightly raking the seed into loose topsoil. Since it is a biennial, it is recommended that you plant two consecutive years in order to produce flowering stalks each year. The first year of growth will produce a ferny rosette, followed by a flower spike the second year.
